It is important for employers to ensure that electrical equipment is regularly tested and tagged in accordance with the regulations, as failure to do so can result in serious injuries and fines.

Electrical test and tagging refers to a process of conducting safety inspections on portable electrical equipment, tools, and appliances to ensure that they are safe for use. This process involves conducting a series of tests on electrical equipment to identify any defects that could lead to a potential electrical hazard and then tagging the equipment with a label indicating the date of the test and the results.

Testing typically includes:

Visual Inspections

These involves checking the equipment for any visible signs of damage, wear, or other issues that could impact its safety.

Insulation Resistance Test

This involves checking the resistance of the insulation in the electrical equipment to determine if it is still effective in preventing electrical shock and other hazards.

Earth Continuity Test

This involves checking the connection between the equipment’s earth conductor and the earth to make sure it provides adequate protection in the event of a fault.

Polarity Test

This involves checking the correct wiring of the equipment to make sure that it is wired correctly and safely.

Functional Test

This involves testing the equipment to make sure it is functioning correctly and safely.

Once the tests have been completed and any defects identified, the equipment is tagged with a label indicating the date of the test and the results. This label acts as a visual reminder that the equipment has been tested and is safe for use. The label also helps to ensure that equipment is regularly tested in accordance with relevant health and safety regulations.
